Ecosystem Preserve & Native Gardens
Friday February 20, 2026 @ 1pm-2:30p
5 families braved a very wet and windy day at Calvin Colleges Nature Preserve and Native Gardens. We spent 45 minutes indoors at the Bunker Interpretive center checking out all the hands-on wildlife & nature exhibits. They had live turtles as well as turtle shells, animal furs, skulls/bones, horns/antlers, water cycle exhibit, nests, dried mushrooms, and much more. It was great for inquisitive and curious hands. Then we braved the rain/snow and wind and walked a short while on the trails and ended at the kids multi-level rock garden/play area. Kids got a little muddy climbing and exploring with an all natural open ended area designed for kids to explore! We left wet and happy.

Families bundled up for a wintery afternoon exploring the woods and large snow mounds with free play in a snowy wooded winter wonderland. Then the group headed to the boardwalk for some beautiful views of the frozen lake and up to what the kids called a "castle" to play on the rocks and snow. Kids took turns pulling each other on sleds when they tired of walking through the snow.

4 families arrived to enjoy the snowy winter wonderland of the large hill/field at East Oakview Elementary in Northview. We spent over an hour sledding down the perfect snowy hill. The sun even came out towards the end! After weeks of sub-zero windchills this was the perfect day to get out and enjoy the snow in 17* with minimal wind. We explored the field in knee deep snow.

Friday, December 5, 2025. 12:30p-2:00p
4 families bundled up for the brisk 25 degree afternoon where we spent a little over an hour running, climbing, jumping, and sliding in the snow at Riverside. "Snow Mountain" created from plows clearing the lot. This allowed a perfect place for the young kids to climb and explore and slide with sleds where they could climb the "hill" themselves and not be hauled by parents. Kids pulled each other around in sleds, climbed snowy trees, and explored the field and vines/woods nearby.

We crossed 2 creek bridges while watching leaves float down stream, collected acorns, and practiced our balance on stone walls.

Morning started off chilly at 36* but that didn't keep us from bundling up and walking the wooded trail loop to the marsh collecting all sizes, colors and shapes of beautiful leaves. We had 6 families with a variety of ages. We ended up back at the pavilion where we spent time making leaf rubbings with crayons and leaf crowns as well as time on the playground. It was a beautiful sunny morning!
